In this workshop you will learn the simplicity of weaving on a rigid heddle loom. You will gain confidence in using your loom, understand weaving terms, and will have the skills to keep weaving on your own by the end of class. The workshop project will be to create a handwoven scarf. The yarn will be provided by the instructor.

This is a 2 Saturday Class

• Scissors

• Looms are available from the guild but you are encouraged to bring your own if it is between 10 and 24 inches wide.

Material Cost: A material fee of $20.00 will be payable to the instructor at the beginning of class.

This Spinning Wheel course is for the person who would like to learn how to spin on a Spinning wheel, and have fun making your own yarn from wool fibres.

Description: Pin looms are a fun and easy way to learn to weave.  Lightweight and portable, pin looms can be tucked into your handbag and taken with you while visiting or on vacation.  In this class, we will use slightly amended potholder looms and wool to make a woven square with the continuous strand method of weaving.  The squares can be sewn or crocheted together, like granny squares, to make any project you can imagine.

Equipment to bring: 

• Potholder loom, if you have one – looms are free from the guild to use during the class.  They are available to rent if you want to continue a project at home.
• If you have your own pin loom, please send a picture to the instructor ahead of class
• Your yarn for weaving.  Bulky or Aran weight 100% wool is recommended.  A minimum of 15 m will be used in this class, but feel free to bring more to continue practicing as time allows.
• A pick or comb for adjusting the weave

Material Cost: Optional potholder loom rental at $10 per month payable on the day of class to instructor

Description: Wet felting is a fiber art technique that uses friction, soap and warm water to interlock wool fibers. The process involves laying out thin layers of wool fibers, wetting them with a soapy solution, and agitating them by rubbing, rolling, and pressing until the fibers bond together. Our morning project will be to try different ways to create flowers from wool roving. Decorative fibres, beads and yarn will make each bloom distinctive. In the afternoon, we will work on a small triangular container made over a resist. When finished, it could hold a small gift or be used as a sewing kit or change purse.

Description: This one day workshop explores the ancient technique of coiling. We will be working with yarns and threads from your “gatherings” (formerly known as your stash). The best choices would be cottons, wools and linens. You want threads and yarns that are strong and do not break easily. Novelty yarns and delicates need special consideration, maybe left for your second or third and fourth basket. Your supplies should include a ball or two of yarn of your choice, sports weight or thicker, a finer yarn maybe a crochet cotton, perl cotton, fingerweight yarn, or 6 stand embroidery floss. Play with your colour choices. This is a very fun class, lots of rooms for creativity and play. I love making baskets and hope you will too.

This was an excuse to play on the twelfth night as the next day , work begins again. The boys would try to burn the flax and tow while the maids tossed buckets of water on them. Delightful for January. Brrrr….

LDWS St Distaff Day will be much fun with games, prizes and lots of laughs. There will be time to socialize and try a few new things. It is a fund raiser for the guild.

In this workshop, a natural brown cashmere top from Mongolia will be our starting point. We will begin our exploration by spinning a series of hand-blended batts created by the instructor that feature this soft, pearlescent fibre. Then spinners will design their own cashmere yarns by experimenting with fibre blends and/or yarn structures. Join us for a day of spinning devoted to spinning luxurious cashmere yarns – be prepared to fall in love with this drool-worthy fibre!

Skill Level: Must be able to comfortably spin singles in both directions and have some experience spinning spun shorter and/or slippery fine fibres – this workshop is beyond a beginner level.

Material Kit + Workshop Notes: Approximately $45.00/person payable to the instructor at the workshop

Optional Additional Fibre Orders:50g of Cashmere Top for $25/bag. This must be pre-ordered by answering the appropriate questions during registration or by sending an email to education@ldws.ca before March 30 2026. The cost will be payable to the instructor at the workshop.

The etransfer payment method is available for those who wish to pre-pay for their materials. Instructions will be provided in an email prior to the class.
