The Power of Creating

Speaker: Amie Latta

Amie Latta is an active LDWS guild member, third year student of the OHS Spinning Certificate program and a lifelong maker, mover and shaker. Owner of CXN Studio, Amie and her husband along with their two children are working to establish a farm small business that looks to connect creativity and community. With over 15 years of experience as a group facilitator, Amie has led many people to a place where they feel like they can try to create something new and make alongside others. 

In this talk, Amie plans to share her personal journey to a deep love of yarn, fibre and spinning. She will share insight into how to you can connect with a deeper level of creativity inside you and how to channel that energy into creating meaningful art. 

To prepare for the full effect of this presentation, please bring along a piece of your own work that showcases you engaging in a creative process. This piece might be something that particularly proud of because it was made in a time that was meaningful to you or a piece that speaks to you overcoming barriers in your life.

Subject: How to Grow a Dye Garden

Did you know you can grow your own dyes in your garden or on your balcony? From a few simple plants you can create a rainbow of dye colours that you can use to dye any natural fibre, yarn or garment. During this in-person talk, Jennifer Triemstra-Johnston will introduce you to how to source, plant and harvest a dye garden. She will outline what plants create colour and the basics of creating a dye bath.

The Fashion Show!!!

Janice Wale’s Fashion show items: Jacket was project for picture this, 75th anniversary and also using up stash.  Weave pattern was M&W.

Tea towel was same as jacket M&W, woven on same loom using up stash for warp.  Making a cross at each end of warp winding half the number of threads.  Tie off both crosses fold warp in half and chain up to both crosses.


Using commercial spun super wash yarn and weak acid dyes. Yarn was pre soaked, I painted on the colours, then placed in mason jar with lid and no extra liquid, placed them in the hot sun for a couple of hours.  Then Let cool to room temperature and washed and rinse.

Bring your handmade items for our Fashion show in February!! Anything qualifies, it doesn’t have to be something which would normally be worn. Last year we had rugs, tea towels as well as scarves, shawls and hats.

The Fashion show is always a fun night to get together and see what we’ve all been making over the last year.

Daryl Lancaster will be presenting “Parallel Threads that Parallel Life”

Daryl Lancaster, artist, teacher, hand-weaver, writer, and professional dressmaker/designer with over 50 years’ experience will be discussing her views and her perspective on hand-woven clothing, recycled experiences and the creative process. Daryl will talk about her adventurous journey over the years with hand-woven clothing and artwork showing images and samples of her fabrics and garments.

Bio – Daryl Lancaster, a hand-weaver and fiber artist known for her awardwinning hand-woven fabric and garments, has been constructing garments for more than half a century. She gives lectures and workshops to guilds, conferences, and craft centers all over the United States. The former Features Editor for Handwoven Magazine, she has written more than 100 articles and digital content, frequently contributes to various weaving and sewing publications and including Threads Magazine. She now has a YouTube channel, The Weaver Sews where she shares her extensive experience sewing

Kim will be presenting – “Foraging and Preparing Natural Fibres“

Come join us to learn about the fun of foraging for fibre. We will explore sources of fibre, both wild and less-wild, that can be used for spinning, cordage and baskets. You will learn how and when to collect a number of local plants and some techniques for getting the fibres into a usable state.

We will have the debut of the 75th Anniversary “Picture This” display.
Diny has led a group of members over several planning meetings. Come see how our members have been inspired by the picture of London’s skyline.
The projects will also be displayed at Door’s Open London and our 75th Anniversary Tea in October

After the enjoying the wonderful food and admiring the “Picture This” display we’ll proceed with the business portion of the meeting

We hope you can attend. We do need to ensure we have enough members to form a quorum for the voting.

Subject: Wet Finishing Woven Goods

What is wet finishing and how do you do it? The ‘final’ step in create whole cloth from individual threads is the wet finishing. Laura will explain how to full wool and apply compression and why these processes are so important to the making of cloth.

Laura Fry chose weaving as a career in 1975 and took weaving classes at every opportunity, including studying at Banff School of Fine Arts in Alberta and Varpapuu Summer Weaving School in Finland. She started her business in 1977 and, since 1980, has worked full-time as a professional handweaver.

Laura’s business focus has evolved with the changing economy and market trends from a concentration on table textiles to weaving yardage on contract for a fashion designer. In addition, Laura teaches throughout Canada, and the United States, writes for a variety of textile publications and wins awards for the beautiful clothing fabrics that have always been her passion. After years of work and study, Laura earned certification as one of Canada’s Master Weavers, the 27th weaver, to achieve the honour.

Laura’s meticulous approach to weaving quality fabrics is characterized by her attention to wet finishing, a procedure often neglected and little understood by most handweavers. In Magic in the Water: wet finishing handwovens, Laura Fry shares her expertise derived from years of research and experimentation. Her guidelines make professional-quality finishing achievable by every handweaver, hobbyist and professional alike. By examining her actual fabrics, both before and after wet finishing, you will understand why Laura says, “It isn’t finished until it is wet finished.”

Speaker – Carson Demers – ergoiknit.com

By day Carson is a physical therapist who operates an award winning ergonomics program for a San Francisco medical center. Every other moment he’s knitting, spinning, designing, teaching, or otherwise up to some fiber fun – always with a watchful eye toward ergonomics. His passion and experience in fiber arts combine with his expertise in physical therapy and ergonomics to create a unique skill set that he eagerly shares with the fiber community to keep us all creating healthfully – and comfortably – ever after.

Carson teaches at knitting, spinning, and other fiber events throughout the US. He loves to teach at local yarn shops and guilds. He has written articles for TNNA and other publications, and is a regular contributor to Ply magazine.

Carson’s presentation will cover ergonomics for both Spinners and Weavers

Carson Demers will address the ergonomic pros and cons for a variety of crafts including weaving, spinning and knitting.  He will speak about how injuries occur and the contributions our craft makes to both the occurrence and prevention. 

He will identify ergonomic risk in our craft and how to prevent injuries through improved posture, stretching and exercise so we can continue in the crafts we love for many more years
